A second bill involves Medi-Cal, the health insurance program for low-income people. Legislative proposals on the table include a bill that would offer emergency loans for hospitals facing closure or those trying to reopen. Now a group of legislators are brainstorming ways to support struggling hospitals and keep them from shutting down or cutting services. While some of these hospitals have encountered financial difficulties in the past, the closure of Madera Community Hospital, which shut down completely at the start of this year and filed for bankruptcy in March, has prompted a new cry for help. Hazel Hawkins, in Hollister, is one of a handful of hospitals statewide facing financial troubles. The end goal, hospital administrators say, is to find a buyer that will take over and not only keep the hospital solvent but, ideally, expand services in the area. But a short-term infusion of cash only buys Hazel Hawkins Memorial Hospital a little time.

Still, Rayne has crafted a memorable novel with the right mix of suspense, horror and emotion. Well-drawn characters reveal themselves through thoughts and actions more than dialogue, as Rayne favors extensive narration over banter. Rayne writes in a semiformal style that evokes turn-of-the-last-century England and lends the novel an appropriately gothic atmosphere. How did you come up with the idea for the book?Īfter my first book had sold in 2015, a thriller about the teen descendants of the American Revolution, my agent suggested I write something for the audience I know most about: middle school! Once I’d warmed to the idea, the story just sort of took shape, mixed with bits of my own past plus a bunch of hilarious and awkward students I’ve had in my 10 years of teaching. He’s knows he can unravel the mystery - but he has to decide if it’s worth blowing up the project and newfound friendships in order to discover the truth. Things seem to be going smoothly until Oliver digs up some big secrets buried in Private Nobody’s past-and present. Even worse, they’re assigned a no-name Union private who not only never saw a real battle but died of an insanely embarrassing disease - dysentery (basically a fancy term for diarrhea).īut Ella turns out to be much more interesting than Oliver expected, and Oliver’s lunch buddy Kevin Kim comes to their project’s rescue as head writing assistant. He’s partnered with Ella Berry, a notorious weirdo herself who’s rumored to be failing 7 th grade, for a class project that forces him to rethink his Civil War passion. The story centers on Oliver Prichard, a 12-year-old Civil War-nerd and re-enactor who knows more than Wikipedia about the period’s battles, dates, and generals. _ What can you tell us about The Not-So-Boring Letters of Private Nobody? Karl took aim at his opponents and changed the ballgame forever. On top of that, Karl's rival economists were writing defenses of these factory owners' actions. Marx wrote Das Kapital-or Capital, in English-while the Industrial Revolution allowed factory owners to subject their laborers to brutal working conditions and nonstop, all-day workdays. Not nice-so let's smash their factories, comrade. So in the quest for more moolah, they pay their employees less than the value the employees contribute, and pocket the difference. If you listen to Marx, you'll find out that capitalists have to pursue profit as doggedly as possible-otherwise their competitors will put them out of business. This book, this first volume of which was published in 1867, provides an economic analysis of capitalism that emphasizes the exploitation of workers. Sounds important, right, but what did he actually say? You might have heard some of his brash slogans from the Communist Manifesto, yet this book, Das Kapital, is the weighty tome that provides the depth to back up the passionate proclamations of his better-known but far shorter text. Revolutions have shaken the world in his name and devout communists today still regard him as a nearly perfect prophet. Money woes got you down? Karl Marx has one solution to share: overthrow capitalism. I, like most other middle-schoolers, was struggling to keep up with the norms of the rest of my class and spent most of the day gossiping with my friends. I first read “A Tree Grows in Brooklyn” when I was in middle school, a time that I still identify as one of the nastiest stages in adolescence. It’s always in the center of everything, out of sight and out of mind, co-existing until someone from the periphery has the sudden urge to pick it back up again. It’s as if I can’t bear to let it out of my sight every time I reread it, or as if the book can’t tear itself away from the countertop. Somewhere between the time when I first read the book five years ago and now, that spot on the kitchen island became the permanent spot for the novel.
